Today we took on the 10 mile Wahweap Ghost Hoodoos Trail. We had barely started before we met with a fence and no apparent way to get over it – good job we brought Bob who opened the gate
. The hike took us along a dry riverbed, with cliffs on either side which started as typical Arizona clay colored and slowly turned to white. We didn’t see a single soul on the whole hike, it was lovely.Â

The Hoodoos are tall tower-like structures, capped with a piece of granite/lava, all created by erosion over time. They are in 3 groups, the 2nd reached via a tiny little trail around the bottom of the cliff, opening up into what seemed like a fairyland: wild desert flowers growing in the white sand, birds, blue sky and the towering white Hoodoos. It was awe inspiring. The 3rd group was something I’ve never seen before – as if someone had poured frosting over the hoodoos and capped them with a cookie. What an experience and well worth the long hike, tolerating the dust devils, through the dry river bed.
Our reward for accomplishing this big hike was dinner at the Birdhouse in Page – fried chicken! We all enjoyed this and highly recommend this easygoing little eatery.Â
